In 2007, overall advertising spending by top-tier marketers was virtually flat. Two bright spots were internet and direct response advertising which increased by 15% and 20% respectively. Newspaper advertising was down 8.5%.
Given that advertising spending is down, marketers need to get even more value from their remaining investment. Dan Ariely, a professor at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, says that the word “free” (in advertising) acts like a drug for many people. “It’s no secret that getting something free feels very good,” he wrote in his book Predictably Irrational. "Zero is an emotional hot button — a source of irrational excitement."
This observation is especially relevant in today’s economic climate. You need to appeal to your customers’ emotion and impulse by offering a special incentive to motivate them to action. The value propositions that attracted customers last year, simply aren’t enough today. Free offers appeal to these emotions.
